The Japanese space industry is about to reach another milestone. From its base on Tanegashima Island, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is counting down to the latest launch of the H-IIA – the Agency's engineering marvel. This is not the H-IIA's first launch, but every mission is fraught with a myriad of potential problems – and all with expensive or deadly consequences. This launch represents a critical test for the H-IIA as it attempts to carry its heaviest payload yet into space. If successful, this launch could prove the H-IIA is ready to join the lucrative “big leagues” of commercial satellite launchers.
