Throughout the day of the 6th June, 1944, reconnaissance planes passed overhead recording every single detail of the battle as it happened. The photos the planes took were used by the Allies as a way to keep up with the events unfolding below, but were then discarded and stored away. This programme uncovers some of the 10 million military photographs stored in The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) and reveals some of the most stunning images ever taken of the D-Day landings. Hundreds of photographs were taken, covering the entire area of the landings and yet many of the photographs are detailed enough to show tanks, landing craft and scores of men on the beaches. In these images the horror of war is actually frozen in time, from a detached, bird’s eye point of view.
